FAIRS
Portland's Multnomah County Fair is just
one of four county fairs held every summer in the greater
Portland area. Across the Columbia River in Vancouver, the
Clark County Fair features nationally known entertainment.
The Clackamas County Fair on the southeast side of Portland
and the Washington County Fair to the west have great rides,
entertainment and fun for the entire family. Just one hour
south of Portland is the state Capitol, Salem, which hosts
the Oregon State Fair at summer's end.
GROTTO
58 acres of peace, beauty and solitude is
the beautiful Historic Monument of Mary, Mother of God. The
heart of the Sanctuary is Our Lady's Grotto.
MT. HOOD FESTIVAL OF JAZZ
This festival has received national attention
and is held at the Mt. Hood Community College Stadium. The
program includes a jazz round-robin featuring 12 local jazz
bands at 12 local restaurants. Friday night, the weekend begins
with the Great Street Dance in Gresham where Main Street is
blocked off and at least three bands jam with famous guest
soloists and singers. Saturday and Sunday, the music continues
in an outdoor picnic-like atmosphere with many talented local
and nationally known musicians and vocalists. Food and drink
abound, and fun, great music, and sun are everywhere.
MT. HOOD/TIMBERLINE LODGE
The State's highest mountain towers 11,000
feet and keeps visitors entertained all year long. Skiing
is available all year, as well as hiking, climbing, and fishing.
Timberline Lodge was built in the 1930's by the US Works Projects
Administration and is at the 6,000-foot level of beautiful
Mt. Hood.
MULTNOMAH KENNEL CLUB
A totally enclosed four-floor complex with
each floor offering a different type of seating and food service.
Pari-mutual wagering on swift racing greyhounds provides exciting
entertainment Tuesday-Saturday with Saturday matinees; late
April-September.
OREGON COAST
The Pacific Ocean offers 400 miles of unspoiled,
gorgeous coastline. Just over an hour from Portland's downtown,
the coast is a great side excursion. Shilo Inns dominates

OREGON MUSEUM OF SCIENCE & INDUSTRY (OMSI)
The entire family is invited to explore and
experience science first-hand. New location at 1945 SE Water
Avenue on the east bank of the Willamette River. For theater

PIONEER COURTHOUSE SQUARE
The downtown Portland public square with
its Corinthian pillars and lavender and purple tiled waterfall
offers a pleasant stopping point. Its brick-paved floor is
engraved with names of over 60,000 financial contributors
to its construction.
PORTLAND BUILDING
The newer civic building with its garland
ledges provides a sturdy platform for Portlandia, an almost
37-foot hammered copper sculptural representation of the female
figure on the Portland city seal. Second only to the Statue
of Liberty in size for a sculpture of this kind.
PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL
RACEWAY
Features all types of racing from local motor
cross racing, drag racing and local car clubs to internationally
known drivers of the CART/PPG Indy Car World Series and Grand
Prix races.
PORTLAND MEADOWS
Enjoy horse racing every Friday, Saturday
and Sunday from late October to late April. Glass-enclosed,
climate controlled grandstand has three floors of excellent
viewing area, plus everything from hot dogs and cold beer
to cocktails and complete dinners. Closed circuit TV monitors
throughout the facility. Accessible paddock area for a close
look at horses and jockeys before each race. Come early Sunday
for a free handicapping class.

ROSE FESTIVAL
Held every spring, this 17-day festival attracts
nationwide attention to its more than fifty events including
the spectacular Grand Floral Parade, the Junior Rose Parade,
the carnival-like Fun Center, CART/PPG Indy Car World Series
Races, Hot Air Balloon Classic, the arrival of Naval Ships
from several nations, the Annual Rose Show, and many more
family fun activities.
