MISSION MILL VILLAGE
This 4.5 acre park includes the Visitors Center,
Thomas Key Woolen Mill (1889), Jason Lee House and Parsonage (1841),
John D. Boone House (1847), Pioneer Presbyterian Church (1858)
and Marion Museum. The history of Salem and the Northwest are
preserved on this site; exhibits and tours available. Browse through
art and craft shops or picnic with the ducks near the mill stream.
OREGON STATE CAPITOL
Built in 1938, the capitol is made of Vermont marble
in modern Greek style. "The Oregon Pioneer," recently
regilded with gold overleaf by the Children of Oregon, stands
24 feet high on the dome. The interior has extensive historic
murals, an Oregon gift shop and an exhibit area. Seasonal tours
to the tower are available.
DEEPWOOD ESTATE
Built in 1894, the Queen Anne-style home with lovely
stained glass windows is located in a 6-acre garden setting with
a carriage house and greenhouse. An interesting nature trail is
well marked. The gazebo in the boxwood garden was part of the
1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition.
BUSH HOUSE/PASTURE PARK
This 89-acre park contains Bush House built in 1877
for pioneer banker and newspaper publisher Asahel Bush. The house
features original wallpaper, rich furnishings and marble fireplaces.
Next door the Bush Barn Art Center exhibits works of Pacific Northwest
artists. Theres a conservatory built in 1882 and beautiful
rose gardens.
SALEMS DOWNTOWN
Bounded by Marion and Mission streets north and
south, and the Willamette River and 12th street west and east,
Salems downtown redevelopment program is recognized nationally.
SALEM CIVIC CENTER
City Hall and library are located on this creekside
setting. Built in 1972.
ART GALLERIES
There are many galleries in the Salem area with
constantly changing exhibits. Contact the Salem Art Association
at Bush Barn Art Center, 600 Mission St. SE (581-2228) or Mid-Valley
Arts Council, 189 Liberty NE (364-7474), for current information.
The annual Salem Art Fair and Festival is held at Bush Park in
late July.
OREGON STATE FAIR &
EXPO CENTER
Since 1860, the 183-acre site has been home to the
Oregon State Fair held the week prior to Labor Day weekend. Other
major events include horse racing, trade shows and flea markets
throughout the year.
SILVER FALLS STATE PARK
Located 26 miles east of Salem, near Silverton.
One of the largest state parks in Oregon, with 14 waterfalls throughout
the 8,600 acres.
ENCHANTED FOREST
Open March through September
Turner exit off I-5. A storybook theme park located
in a forest setting. A mining town, haunted house, food stands
and live stage entertainment are among the attractions.
MT. ANGEL ABBEY
Since 1887, the Benedictine Order has called this
monastery home. Built on a 330-foot butte, 14 miles northeast
of Salem, it has a beautiful view. The library is famous for its
architecture and collection of rare books. Tours are by appointment
only. A gift shop on premises.
OREGON GARDEN
The Oregon Garden is a botanically challenging,
world-class facility which showcases the wealth and diversity
of plant material in a visually compelling manner. It is a landscaped
approach to plant display, resulting in a garden that is a skillfully
arranged environmental laboratory for education, research and
