The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway is designed and maintained as a scenic route that provides access to recreational opportunities like fishing, canoeing, hiking, and Nordic skiing. There are regular services available in Bend.
One of Central Oregon’s epic mountain bike rides circles Newberry Crater Rim in the Deschutes National Forest, inside the U.S. Forest Service’s Newberry Crater National Monument. The ride covers about 20 miles, with more than 2,000 feet of ups and downs.

The Lower Deschutes was designated an Oregon Wild and Scenic Waterway in 1970 and a Federal Wild and Scenic River in 1988. The river is characterized by a deep and rugged rim rock-lined canyon that has canyon walls rising from 900 feet to 2,600 feet. This canyon carves its way through the eastern Oregon desert leaving behind one of the most impressive gorges in the west.

Our purspose is to enable a deeper understanding of the region's arts, culture, history and natural sciences through the presentation and interpretation of visual art exhibits, historical artifacts, living history performances and wildlife encounters.
Lava Butte rises 500 feet above the visitor center. This cinder cone erupted 7,000 years ago and covered over nine square miles with lava. The butte offers a panoramic view of central Oregon, including a spectacular view of the Cascade Range and the northwest flank of Newberry. An interpretive trail circles the crater rim.
Mount Bachelor was formed between 11,000 and 15,000 years ago as a shield volcano but was later capped with a stratovolcano as the eruptions apparently became more explosive over time. It is the youngest prominent volcano in the Three Sisters area of Oregon. Bachelor is composed mainly of basalt and basaltic andesite.
It last erupted between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago and is entirely covered with Mazama ash from the catastrophic eruption of Mount Mazama about 6,845 years ago.
